Every year Special Olympics Manitoba recognizes coaches, athlete and volunteers for their dedication and hard work with the " Of the Year" Awards. Anyone can nominate a person for these awards. The nominations are brought to the Provincial Program Council and the Program Committee who determines the winner.
The nomination deadline is March 7.
The coaching awards are Grassroots and High Performance Coach of the Year.
There is also a Builder of the Year award given out to a volunteer who has made a significant contribution to the Special Olympics movement locally, provincially and/or nationally and has best exemplified the spirit, philosophy and goals of Special Olympics in Manitoba.
The winners are announced at the annual Awards Banquet of the Provincial Conference in April.

Female Coach of the Year
- Lillian Falk - Lillian is the Head Coach of the powerlifting program in Niverville and she also helps coach the Steinbach Flames track and winter programs. Lillian is an enthusiastic coach and is always there to support her athletes.
- Joyce Wityshyn - Joyce has been involved with Special Olympics in the Westman Region for the past 22 years and is the Head Coach of the Birkenbeiners Nordic Ski program in Brandon. Joyce is a very dedicated and skillful coach who brings out the best in her athletes. (Winner).
Male Coach of the Year
- Rick Syrenne - Rick is currently a coach for the North End Seals Swim Club and has coached 5-pin bowling in previous years. Rick is a very positive coach and is well respected by his athletes.
- Chirs Shumsky - Chris has been a coach with Special Olympics for the past 6 years in the Eastman Region and is the head coach of the Springfiled Track Club in Oakbank. Chris has attended Regional, Provincial and National Competitions with his athletes and at these competitions his athletes have all improved on their personal best times. (Winner).
- David Toupin - David is currently a coach for the EK Rascals program and also helps out with the EK Sharks swim team. David is very passionate about Special Olympics and strives to be best coach he can be.
Builder of the Year
- Erich Hirschfeld - Erich is currently the Regional Leader for the Central Region of Special Olympics Manitoba. For over ten years, Erich has been quite involved with Special Olympics programs, taking on the responsibility of coaching the Winkler Wizards athletic club and Winkler 10 Pin club. Erich has a wonderful rapport with all the athletes and is always willing to improve Special Olympics programming in the Central Region. (Winner)
"Years of Service" Awards
The provincial office, along with the Regions, recognize coaches for their years of service coaching with Special Olympics Manitoba. The awards are for 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of volunteer service. The awards are given out at the Annual Awards Banquet at the Provincial Conference in April.
