Coach Training RequirementsVolunteers have the opportunity to take advantage of many training and educational opportunities.
Special Olympics Manitoba offers a number of training sessions throughout the year. For example, workshops are offered on topics such as nutrition, leadership and sport psychology, etc. In some cases training is required.
Here are the three parts to coach training:
1)Respect in Sport
Program volunteers are required to complete the online Respect in Sport Course. This free course takes approximately 3-4 hours to complete and it can be completed in more than one sitting. New volunteers are required to complete Respect in Sport before entering a volunteer placement. To complete the course, visit http://sportmanitoba.essentialtalk.com and register under “Special Olympics Manitoba”.
2)Sport-specific
There is Special Olympics Canada training offered through SOM, called “SOC Competition Sport Coach Workshop”. The upcoming course dates can be found on the SOM website by going to www.specialolympics.mb.ca. Volunteers are reimbursed for the cost of the course. The course is typically a full weekend or it is held over four evenings.
Sport-specific training is also offered through the specific provincial sport organizations. For example, Soccer Manitoba, Swim Manitoba, etc. will have a schedule of upcoming training opportunities for their sports.
3)Theory
Theory is generic to all sports. These courses called “Introduction Competition Level A & B” are offered through Coaching Manitoba. These courses are typically a full weekend and the cost is reimbursed by SOM. More information on upcoming courses can be found at http://www.coachingmanitoba.ca
