Introducing our new CEO - Rachel Wheatley

Special Olympics Manitoba (SOM) and its Board of Directors welcomed Rachel Wheatley as the organization's Chief Executive Officer this past fall. Rachel has already proven to be a valuable leader and the future of our organization is looking bright!

Rachel has been a long-time supporter of SOM, joining as a volunteer in 2004 during her time at University as a coach for her local softball program. She would go on to coach the team for 13 years.

In 2012, Rachel became a Finance Risk and Audit Committee member, later becoming the Chair and sitting on the SOM Board of Directors as Treasurer until recently stepping down to start her role as CEO.

In 2013, Rachel volunteered with motionball, a national not-for-profit organization supporting the Special Olympics movement across Canada. She signed on as an event director in Manitoba and helped grow the local event to raise collectively over $1 million dollars since its inception. She was a member of the motionball National Board of Directors until 2022.

Rachel earned her undergraduate degree in Commerce and Master’s Degree in Business from the University of Manitoba. She was awarded the Mayor’s Service Award in 2020 for her commitment to the SOM community.

What she loves most about Special Olympics Manitoba is the community, both on and off the field. Everyone she meets - from staff to sponsors, to coaches, to athletes, to volunteers - is passionate about coming together in sport to foster acceptance and inclusion.

Rachel looks forward to meeting more of our community and growing the movement across the province. There will be an opportunity for anyone interested to join her at a virtual town hall this upcoming March.
