Volunteer Highlight: Lex Langston
Lex Langston sounds like a superhero name. And that is exactly what he is... a Westman region superhero!
In 2012, after coaching his own kids in a variety of sports, he felt like he still had more time and knowledge to share. Special Olympics had a large presence in Brandon and it caught his eye. He inquired about their volunteer needs, finding that they had a need for a floor hockey coach, and feeling it was a perfect fit, he jumped right in and never looked back.
"I find it very rewarding to see the enjoyment the athletes get from participating," said Lex. "[It's most apparent] when we play against guest teams such as the Brandon Wheat Kings or the Brandon University Bobcats."
Taking it upon himself to manage the recruitment of his own volunteers, and always helping the Westman region leadership team when needed, he has become a valuable and integral member of the SOM community in Brandon.
A strong advocate for the movement in his community, he understands firsthand the importance of Special Olympics programming for individuals with an intellectual disability. For him, it has always been, and will always be, about the athletes.
"Special Olympics athletes always give back way more than they receive," he added. "It has been a privilege for me to be involved with them."
The world would be a much kinder place with more people like you in it, Lex. Thank you for everything you do!
