My Special Olympics Story

Angle Ferland

Hi, my name is Angie Ferland. I'm from the Parkland Region. I have been a Special Olympics athlete since 2010. I participate in 5-pin bowling and Tiger Fire Floor Hockey. Before I started with Special Olympics, I came from a small town to start high school in 2007. When I was in grade 11, one of my teachers told me about Special Olympics and asked me if I would like to join, I said I would love to. My first sport was 5-pin bowling, then I joined floor hockey in 2011. Being a Special Olympics athlete has really changed my life. It gave me the strength, courage, and ability to become a better athlete. I love competing, making new friends, reuniting with old friends, and having fun.

My first National Games were in Vancouver, B.C. in 2014. I was nervous and excited. I flew on a plane for the first time. I came home with a bronze medal for bowling. It was such an amazing experience, one I'll never forget. With the Covid pandemic, it's been really hard to not get in any practices. It's been challenging, but I know we'll get through this. I'm staying active by going out for walks and working out to music and spending time with my family. Most importantly I'm happy to be a Special Olympics athlete and I wouldn't change anything about it.
