Volunteer Highlight: Robin Henderson

Our Norman Region has been growing steadily over the last few years. Despite the pandemic, this region has seen a boom in programs and participants, and it is all thanks to the wonderful volunteers who dedicate so much of their time and effort.

One such volunteer is Robin Henderson, a coach for the new FUNdamentals and Rhythmic Gymnastics programs running in Thompson. After moving there for work in 2021, she heard through the grapevine that Special Olympics needed volunteers.

“I thought it sounded like fun and I wanted to get involved,” said Robin. “I am so inspired by our athletes! They motivate me to become stronger and continue working towards my own athletic goals. I'm proud of all the dedication they've shown and am so excited for what the next year will bring.”

Week in and week out, Robin spends her free time helping our athletes develop new skills, fostering a safe space for them to find a sense of belonging. For our athletes, Special Olympics is more than sport - it's a community that encourages inclusion and teaches them to be their most authentic selves.

When asked why she loves to volunteer with Special Olympics Manitoba, she says it comes down to one simple thing: she enjoys it because it’s fun!

“Of course, it also feels good to help our athletes develop their sports skillsets and build their confidence,” she added. “Right now, I especially love coaching rhythmic gymnastics because it is physically challenging and mentally engaging to learn and memorize the routines alongside our athletes.”

Coaches like Robin are rare and the athletes in Thompson are fortunate to have someone like her lead and guide them.
